Shortage is driving up chocolate prices

It looks like your Valentine’s Day chocolate is going to cost you more.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that cocoa -- the raw material used to make chocolate hearts and tarts -- is diminishing due to adverse weather conditions and poor farming techniques.

Combine that with the fact that the demand for the sweet stuff hit an all-time high last year, and the world has an imbalance that has forced the price of the commodity almost 40 percent since 2012. Helping to drive demand are countries like China and India that have disposable income to afford the treats.

Poor farming techniques? Because after a few thousand years they forgot how to cocoa?

I remember a few years back the coffee crop went to hell because of the weather. At that time we paid right under €8 per half kilo. We now pay under €5 for it. Does not matter, we drink it anyway. Some things I just can't negotiate on.

We buy and eat preciously little chocolate. I bought a dark chocolate bar over a week ago and there's one piece left. 13.gif I'll buy some when I want to anyway.

F*ck Valentines. I despise Hallmark Holidays.

I don't often eat chocolate, but when I do, it won't be on Valentines.

Ok
not to piss everybody off tonight/ to Day , but I get free Chocolate every day
because I am a Senior and joined a senior citizens venue for $15 a year
because they get donated Pastries , Bread , Chocolate and many other food items

we walk in to the dining room and breakfast is there for us
I don't eat there
I grab a big cup of Coffee , hit the Pastry Box and grab about
4 boxes of the Chocolate Croissants and three boxes of Cinnamon rolls
about three days a week .
On Mondays , there's a bucket or two of Candy Bars , some Ghiradelli
some Dove , some just snickers and stuff .

Hot Coco ? you want big cans of Coco , tons of them for free .

Muffins ? you want Muffins ? Tons of Muffins

it's 3 blocks down the street , some kind of Salvation Army Old Folks watering hole type place .
I haven't bought bakery in a store once up here , bread is free by the tons

aslo vegetables too .
Milk is free , you're allowed two gallons per visit Monday Wednesday Friday
that's 6 gallons of free milk a week . and i do drink that much of it .
I'm STUFFED
Think I'll have a Chocolate Croissant right now in fact

After Valentines, when it's on sale. Or after Easter, after Halloween, etc. Though for all we know the stores ship the candies back to get re-packaged for the next holiday 13.gif

They always say there's a shortage in something if they're trying to push the price up. Cocoa has actually been falling in price lately:
