SETI Alien-Hunting Telescope Array Shut Down After Funding Slows

The SETI Institute's Allen Telescope Array has been forced offline due to lack of funding, essentially crippling the organization's hunt for extraterrestrial communications.

In a note to supporters by SETI Institute chief executive Tom Pierson earlier this week, Pierson noted that reduced funding by both the National Science Foundation and U.C. Berkeley had put the telescope array, which searches the sky for radio transmissions, into "hibernation".

"Hibernation means that, starting this week, the equipment is unavailable for normal observations and is being maintained in a safe state by a significantly reduced staff," Pierson wrote.

Until SETI can raise additional funding, the Allen Telescope Array (ATA) will remain offline. It takes about $1.5 million per year top operate the ATA, Pierson wrote, and an additional $1 million per year to cover the additional costs of the SETI science effort. SETI referred possible donors to its donations page.

What politics from both sides wants to teach us is that things are never complex. If you have your little package and something doesn't fit into that package, You don't know what to make of it so you want to dismiss it or then you will have to do the work of reconsidering your assumptions. - Michael Malice

SETI needs to go online with downloadable software for anybody interested in scanning space for signals. I suspect there are plenty of even willing to pay 10 bucks for the opportunity

It was a mere 2 weeks ago the government quietly admitted they did find something in Roswell, and a declassified file titled “Flying Discs” has been uncovered which details exploding UFO’s and alien landings breaking up over the mountains in Salt Lake City, Utah.

I suppose now that we have disclosure SETI has been rendered obsolete? dunno.gif Disclosure certainly didn't happen with much fanfare or ticker tape.

I'm curious if and when they finally scrap the NASA front and show us what they really have, and have had for a very, VERY long time; but it's catch 22 in that department.

How do they break it to people there are far more efficient ways to generate energy and in spite of that knowledge we were all forced to consume oil and watch them build nuclear power plants.

We all know how well oil and nukes work out for humanity, but then limitless inexpensive energy would benefit everyone. For those that run the show and just spent the last 10 years transferring all the worlds wealth to 0.01% of the population that's certainly not an option.

They would kill us all as soon as invite us to dinner, and that is the truth.
