Spambots

Something just dawned on me. After having operated forums for over three years now. I get spambots that register, activate the account, but never post. Sometimes as many as 30 a day. So naturally I go thru the member list about once a week and clean those accounts out.

I also ban the IP as well as the IP range so they dont come back. As I'm sure most Forum Owners do.

I think the real reason the spambots register is so that I do ban the IP range. In reality it stops other intrested people from reading the message I present.

Are these Spambots Government run?

Im starting to think this might be the case.

Just a Thought.

Some ranges from the Ukraine, China, the Philippines, and other SPAM countries can be banned no problems.
Ditto for TOR exit nodes. Of course we sometimes have to ban with a broad brush.
There are places all over the world and the US that are nada but spam servers.
I could drop a bunch of names but it makes no difference.
Nobody does anything about it, which tells me your Spambots / Government run could be true, at least to some degree.

What I find so odd, is they sit there as a member for months and never post.

What's the point in being a Spammer if your not gonna Spam chuckle.gif

It gets to the point that the name they register with is a dead giveaway

It is not entirely true. I (as example) have been member for some time and never post anything, though I regularly read the forum and it's topics.
chuckle.gif And if I was not banned by Octo (for not posting anything) and had to prove that I'm not "spambot" or "shill" I should continue just reading. But (surely) my case is just exception.

That was strange karutzar, there are a few bot infected computers on your ip range, at the time we had no idea you were in that range.
Glad you said something! cheers.gif
We never ban anyone's IP unless there are bots hammering on us, at that point if good people get caught up in it, we have to rely on the email addy that shows up on the 403 error, to get things back to normal.
Most of all this could be prevented if people would use an antivirus, or even Malwarebytes.
I don't know how people can have a bot infected computer and not realize it. It would slow the users computer to a crawl.

Jay, this explain all. Until the end of 2013 I was on different ISP, fast, reliable. Then I change it to cable TV/I-net package ISP. I don't watch TV for around 20+years now, but my spouse do. Anyway, apart that I'm force to switch on DHCP service (and keep open 2 ports more) the routing map of the ISP is...
Yeah, most people are PC illiterate - they are just consumers and the thinking with their own heads brings them headache.
