A spider that likes the smell of gasoline so much it chooses to build its webs in car emission systems was behind the recall of thousands of Mazda cars in the United States.

Mazda Motor Corp said on Thursday it was recalling 52,000 cars after the National Highway Safety Commission said the spider webs may restrict a vent line, which could cause the emissions control system to increase pressure in the fuel tank.
The build-up of webs in the emission systems could lead to fuel tank cracks and possible leaks.

The culprit is the Yellow Sac spider, which makes the Mazda6 model of Mazda cars its home because it is lured inside by the smell of the fuel.
"While it's very rare, this spider's distinguishing characteristic is that it likes the smell of gasoline, caused by the hydrogen oxide," said Mitsuhiro Kunisawa, an automotive journalist.

The affected model, the Mazda6, has two pipes coming out from its gas tank, which is rare and means that the smell of gasoline is strong enough to draw the spider in but not strong enough to kill it, Mr Kunisawa said.

He added that there was no similar problem with any other Mazda car.

Hey JR! beercheer.gif

Octo. Maybe it was the dog. rofl.gif Yeah I didn't believe the gasoline thing either. If that's what is was than it shouldn't be effecting this type car only.

I'm sorry but most all forms of life have an aversion to refined petroleum products, I don't buy it the more I think about it. Which is really odd because what the hell is the answer here?

I got one better, use to guide on a ranch near Del Rio Texas, we had to put screen over the air intakes of the jeeps so when parked in the barn the mice would not pack the air cleaners with livestock corn.

No shït 100% truth, part of my function was to get the vehicles ready for upcoming hunting season. 1-jeep did not want to turn over even with a pull start. removed the spark plugs and 1-cylinder was rust colored, so we put it on a trailer and hauled it back to Houston. 1-nite I removed the head only to find a mouse had taken the corn, traveled up the exhaust pipe through the muffler and packed a cylinder full of corn as the exhaust valve was open.

When I pulled the head off the dead mouse's head was smashed from the valve closing on it's head/neck.

100% true-wished I had taken a picture of that.

Got the jeep running that weekend, never got rid of a exhaust leak tho...
