We all dread opening an electric bill, especially when air-conditioning drives up costs and maxes out a family budget.

But Kristin Harriger's recent electric bill was beyond shocking. Rather than a bill for $100 or so that the single mom from Abilene, Texas, was expecting, she was billed for $1,381,783.92, according to the Business Insider.

"I opened it. I read it. Then just went, 'Oh, my gosh. That's a lot of money," Harriger told the Abilene Reporter News.

She thought it was a joke at first, and even shared photos of the bill with her friends.

After contacting her utility company, Potentia Energy, she discovered it wasn't a joke, but a computing error. Rather than charging her the normal 9 cents per-kilowatt-hour rate, the utility charged her $1,000 per kilowatt hour.

The $1,000 per-kilowatt-hour rate is far above the best offer available to her. The Public Utility Commission of Texas website PowerToChoose.org shows that Abilene residents can get 8.2 to 12.1 cents per kilowatt hour, notes the Abilene newspaper.

"I'm glad I didn't have autopayments," Harriger told the Business Insider.

The utility company acknowledged the mistake and has told Harriger that a corrected bill would be sent to her.

In the meantime, she has set aside $150 to pay the bill when it comes.

"I work on a budget," she told the Business Insider. "I'm a single mom with an autistic child who tries to make ends meet. … I get my bills and I pay them."

Just not ones for over $1.3 million.

Isn't it strange how computers get blamed for things like this?

Toronto schools pay high prices for small jobs

Quote:Here’s what taxpayers were charged for work done at Toronto public schools:

Installing a $17 pencil sharpener: $143 to put in four screws.

The installation of a sign on a school’s front lawn: $19,000

An electrical outlet on the wall in a school library: $3,000

A “breakfast club” kitchen: $250,000

When the librarian at the electrical outlet school saw the bill she hit the roof, wondering at “the number of books that could have been purchased with $3000.”

A Star investigation has found examples of charges that are out of whack with the amount of work done. The work in question was carried out by some of the 900-strong maintenance and construction trades people who have an exclusive contract with the Toronto District School Board. In the case of the electrical plug, the job took four hours, but taxpayers were billed 76 hours, which sources say was done to account for the time of idle workers who had no assignments that week.

What makes the situation so serious is that Toronto public schools are facing a budget crunch so deep one trustee called it a “bloodbath.” Trustees must find $109 million in cuts, which may cut supports for special needs students, and close some classrooms and cafeterias.

Principals, trustees and parents say that much needed work on Toronto’s aging schools is not getting done. Principals were terrified of repercussions from their management and the union and would not go on the record for this story. Some who have complained say they have been threatened by the union with losing their jobs if they speak up.

Union boss Jimmy Hazel, when first asked about these high costs two weeks ago, unleashed a stream of profanity at a Star reporter.

“We don’t need to f------ prove anything to anybody about costs,” Hazel said. “A s---load more work was done to justify the cost of that plug job I can tell you.”

Hazel protested that “we have a lot of enemies at the (school) board as well as a lot of friends.”

Hazel now says the problem was a “clerical error” and much of the money was refunded to the schools in question.

Energy bills have been soaring here since BC hydro installed smart metres. They won't accept it's the smart metres responsible, they just tell customers they're using more electricity.

When a BC Hydro technician visited her home in early March, the meter was moving at “warp speed,” which the technician said was unusual, particularly since everything in the house was turned off. Even when the breakers in her house were turned off, the meter advanced every 11 seconds.

Scariest thing about them is their vulnerability to hacking.

I bet they would be all over it if the energy bills had gone down.

lol.gif Of course. My BC Hydro bill is ~ $70 every two months. I refused the smart metre and they were very pleasant about it, no problem at all. I was lucky though, managed to stall them until the outrage peaked and they were forced to back off.
