Oh mate Happy Birthday. I hope something happens to you today that is truly amazing and makes this day special like a shooting star or a beautiful sunset.

I can see by your coat my friend you're from the other side. Just one thing I got to know. Who won?

Thanks for the Birthday wishes. I did not even think about it until the evening.

I got a visit from the moose last night. He did not run off when he saw me, this time. Maybe he realised I was too drunk on home brewed cider to be a threat!

I will have to do a food run soon. This will mean I will not be about online much as I have to pay for internet by usage. Due to food scarcity, my limited funds will need to be used more on food than internet until I can catch some food. The garden is not producing yet.
With the lake being frozen I have no chance of fish either.

This kind of upsets me as my intention is to be self sufficient. Trekking to the nearest habitated zone kind of defeats the object! After all in a real bugout situation there would be no shops to visit!

Life is like a penny, you can spend it on what you like, but you can ONLY spend it once.

Cool. I'd like to try it myself at some point. I love fishing. I normally go Carp fishing in lakes but like river and sea fishing too. Not done it for a while though. When I was in Australia I bought a rod but all I kept catching was cat fish. We cooked one but it was a really horrible taste. I wonder if you could locate a salmon farm and do a bit of poaching!

Good idea I like a bit of 'poached' salmon. chuckle.gif

Good news! I found a rabbit in a trap today. I was very pleased to see it, the rabbit on the other hand did not look pleased to see me.
Dinner is gonna be great. I also have some more cider ready.

So, in hindsight Nodoom, considering there was no crop harvest to preserve then take you through the Winter & Spring, what would you do differently, or what food provisions would you bring when starting a bugout in the Fall?

I think I would bring a a good deal of rice and dried goods that would not weigh we down too much.

NODOOM if you are going to try ice fishing get some canned corn and use it for bait it works very well also canned shrimp but the shrimp wont keep very long once opened. the corn on the other hand can be used for days just stick a kernel on your hook and drop it down, you can even drop some in the water to lure the fish to your spot. another thing to try is shine a flashlight into the water at night where you are fishing it will also attract fish to your spot, of course it is frowned upon by the authorities but if you are in an isolated spot and trying to survive off what you catch then make your own rules. the best lure you could possibly use is what we here in Canada call the C I L lure or more commonly called dynamite

Ice fishing is commonly done without bait here. Fish are suckers for the shiny, but if you only have a hook the motion works too.

You can also make two holes and attach several lines and hooks (or a net) to a board, slide it under the ice from one hole to the other and leave it there for a while, but then you probably want to use some kind of bait.
