Someone once said the only thing really new in the world is the history we don't know. The Irish people are learning that right now and it's a painful experience.

It began five years ago when an order of nuns in Dublin sold off part of its convent to real estate developers. On that property were the remains of 133 women buried in unmarked graves, and buried with them was a scandal.

As it turns out, the women had been virtual prisoners, confined by the Catholic Church behind convent walls for perceived sins of the flesh, and sentenced to a life of servitude in something called the Magdalene laundries.

It sounds medieval, something that happened hundreds of years ago, but, in fact, the last Magdalene laundry closed just over two years ago....

Oh I see how that worked. No doubt a big relief for families to have the church step in and "help" them deal with the shame of the sin that they instigated to begin with. sad2.gif

The healing has to begin somewhere somehow. Those residential schools... when I was a kid, grade 5 -7, I was invited to spend weekends there, the last one to close in BC, maybe 1980 or so. Thee kids were angry, hated white people they still do. I'd earned my place among them with fists and a foul mouth rofl.gif but they were very tough and that was all they respected. The stories I could tell ...

The residential school was on a ranch and they could have their horses there, they had a gymnasium, a huge swimming pool, hot meals and movie nights. They had field trips and allowance. But they also had bars on the windows, no shower doors or bathroom doors and did not have the choice to be there. Many never saw their parents again once they went there. About abuse I couldn't say, it certainly wasn't in the open.

So this July I'm having a bbq. I'm inviting all my Indian friends on the reserve and all the close neighbors. Almost 9 years in this valley and not once has there been a gathering. It may end up a disaster but it may end up where we say hello instead of just walking past because you aren't white, or you aren't native.

Reminds me of a saying by a woman called Chiwid:
How can you say you hate me, when you don't even know my name?
