People who stick to five healthy habits in adulthood can add more than a decade to their lives, according to a major study into the impact behaviour has on lifespan.

Researchers at Harvard University used lifestyle questionnaires and medical records from 123,000 volunteers to understand how much longer people lived if they followed a healthy diet, controlled their weight, took regular exercise, drank in moderation and did not smoke.

When the scientists calculated average life expectancy, they noticed a dramatic effect from the healthy habits. Compared with people who adopted none of them, men and women who adhered to all five saw their life expectancy at 50 rise from 26 to 38 years and 29 to 43 years respectively, or an extra 12 years for men and 14 for women.

The five healthy habits were defined as not smoking; having a body mass index between 18.5 and 25; taking at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day, having no more than one 150ml glass of wine a day for women, or two for men; and having a diet rich in items such as fruit, vegetables and whole grains and low in red meat, saturated fats and sugar.

Notice they say drinking in moderation; Drinking some is better than drinking none and I'll drink to that drinking.gif

My Grandma died last summer at 102. She didn't die of any illness, she decided to die and quit eating and drinking, she was just done living. Even the docs were surprised at how long she survived on nothing.

How to live a long happy life according to the world's oldest people:

Their varied lifestyles chime with research that suggests while exercising and eating high quality foods that aren't processed are a given for a person's well-being, our bodies react uniquely to different lifestyles.

A genetics professor says people need to stop counting calories

That partly comes down to our digestive systems. In a recent interview with The Independent, Professor Tim Spector, a geneticist at King's College London, argued that counting calories to restrict how much we eat is counterproductive.

“We have about 100 trillion microbes inside our body in the lower intestine or colon and a microbe is anything you need a microscope to see. We generally talk about bacteria, but there are viruses and fungi too and they all contribute to our health.“

“We are all unique in our microbes, which explains why we respond differently to foods,” he said Professor Spector.

i have quite a few spring/summer projects i want to get done,places to go-things to do
so.. far less time online and more time with outside nature too
..should be satisfying/& relaxing by the fire pit (etc..) thrown in as well ;
.. have long distance company coming this summer & will be a good time on that
..spring/summer/fall are short seasons here & so tis time to enjoy them while i can.
