673 of the wildland firefighters battling the ferocious blaze around Yosemite National Park have something that other hotshot crew members do not: a prison identification number.

They're part of California's conservation camp program, which takes convicts out of jail cells and puts them on the front lines of wildfires, where they earn $1 an hour cutting containment lines that keep flames from spreading.

"They are in the thick of it," said Capt. Jorge Santana of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The agency has sent 621 men and 52 women to tackle the so-called Rim Fire, which has engulfed nearly 300 square miles of land in 12 days. More have been deployed to 20 other fires across the state.

"They work 24-hour shifts," Santana said. "They sleep in tents at base camp. They work side-by-side with other firefighters.

How many of those slave laborers were caught with a pot seed in the ashtray? sad2.gif It costs govt in the US around $86,000 a year of taxpayer money to keep each and every one of those people in jail lmao.gif fail whale.
The vast majority would be otherwise, law abiding tax payers.
wtf2.gif is the problem?
The problem is the prison industrial complex. Gangsta' Rap was pushed as the in thing at one point to influence young minds and fill up the prisons with slave labor, but it's not what they had hoped for in terms of cost benefit ratio. 37.gif oops.

Well some people need to be locked up for a while. If this is a program that can help lost souls get back on track, then good. But I'm looking at it from the rosy side here.

That's a damned dangerous job and they do 24 hour shifts? damned.gif How much money are they saving by doing this? 13.gif
