Wolves were demonized and nearly killed off and driven into extinction all over the world but after reading through this amazing and frightening list of real wolf attacks on humans i'm able to realize the terror and fear people must have lived with and felt about these wild and vicious predators for so long and still do now...

Yes, they are formidable and intelligent predators who have evolved to be at the top of the food chain in their environment.

Quote:Officials in Idaho and Wyoming have had good success going after problem wolves using aerial hunting, he said.

One reason wolves are thriving in Alberta is that the deer and elk populations are also doing well, according to Carbyn.

Quote:Matters are still far from the disaster of 1878, when British officials in this area recorded 624 human killings by wolves. But fear is pervasive. Men stay awake all night, keeping vigil with antique rifles and staves. Mothers keep children from the fields, and infants are kept inside all day.

Quote:In Scotland, during the reign of James VI, wolves were considered such a threat to travellers that special houses called "spittals" were erected on the highways for protection.

In France alone, historical records indicate that between the years 1580-1830, 3,069 people were killed by wolves, 1,857 of which were non-rabid.Italianmarker records indicate that between the XV-XIX centuries, 440 people were killed by wolves in central Padania. In Imperial Russiamarker 1890, a document was produced stating that 161 people had been killed by wolves in 1871.

During the First World War, starving wolves had amassed in great numbers in Kaunasmarker, Vilnamarker and Minskmarker and began attacking Imperial Russianmarker and Imperial Germanmarker fighting forces, causing the two fighting armies to form a temporary truce to fight off the animals. After the fall of the Soviet Union, documents were discovered indicating that a number of wolf attacks had occurred in villages during the Eastern front. This information was apparently suppressed by the Sovietmarker government in order to hide the consequences of the mass confiscation of firearms during the war.

Hypothesis as to why wolves in Eurasia historically acted more aggressively toward humans than those in North America is that in the past, Old World wolf hunting was mostly an activity for the nobility, whereas American wolf hunts were partaken by ordinary citizens, nearly all of them possessing firearms. This difference could have caused American wolves to be more fearful of humans, making them less willing to venture into settled areas.

Quote:In France, historical records compiled by rural historian Jean-Marc Moriceau indicate that during the period 1362–1918, nearly 7,600 people were killed by wolves, of whom 4,600 were killed by non-rabid wolves

There have been no lethal wolf attacks on humans in Finland since 1880, but between 1710-1880 there are 178 registered attacks.

Wolves attacking dogs are common though, this maps shows those attacks between 2010-2012. Dogs attacked (90) in red and wolves killed in blue.

The link to the wikipedia list of wolf attacks against humans within my opening post really opened my eyes and mind because i never actually realized how many thousands upon thousands of people have been mauled and killed by wolves, literally ripped apart and eaten alive and still are now and wolves attacking and killing so many humans continuously during the middle ages surely influenced and blossomed into our numerous legends of werewolves...
