I find this very interesting, what do you all think?

Quote:

Britain launched a public consultation on Monday to ask whether controversial “three-parent” fertility treatments should be available to families hoping to avoid passing on incurable diseases.

...

The new potential treatments involve intervening in the fertilisation process to remove faulty mitochondrial DNA, which can lead to a range of inherited conditions including fatal heart problems, liver failure, brain disorders, blindness and muscular weakness.

I'm all for combating incurable diseases and everything else...it gives each person a fighting chance in this toxic-ridden world.

Quote:The HFEA said other critics may worry that modifying embryos to avoid disease could be the first step towards the creation of “designer babies”, whose genetic makeup could be modified as embryos to ensure certain traits such as height or hair colour.

I'm not sure what the issue is here 13.gif perhaps there's a profit motive in marketing designer babies according to parents' pocket book? I don't know. But we breed cattle, hogs and dogs for optimal utilization and recreation so why not humans? dunno.gif

Hi Shadow. Yeah, I don't see what the problem is, that is, if it's left as a choice.

I'm not too sure about that Yankees. Won't this create healthier people who will use up less healthcare dollars?

I think it is about Doctors figuring out a way to milk parents.

Imagine if you desperately wanted a child, but knew the child may have a brain disorder. Imagine your doctor telling you he/she could ensure there would be no brain disorder with this treatment. I think it's quite miraculous.

I have little faith in Dr's getting DNA manipulation right.

I think it's miraculous too if the technology is not hyped. Too often (thalidamide comes to mind) the promise is kept but the unintended consequences are far worse than before the tampering. Like the little girl with the red shoes. She got her red shoes then danced in them until she dropped dead.

coffeetime.gif It will be very interesting to see what happens in the next couple of generations. It's interesting, too, what the Bible has to say about the strong vs. the weak.

This advancement in gene technology will of course not be available to everybody.
