Three college students have been arrested in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings, a Boston police source said this morning.

The Boston police official Twitter account said that three additional “suspects” had been taken into custody.

The source said the three had been arrested by federal authorities.

Police said in the tweet that further details would follow.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is facing federal charges of using a weapon of mass destruction and malicious destruction of property resulting in death in the twin bombings that struck near the Marathon finish line on April 15.

His brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, was killed in a confrontation with police several days afterward as the two tried to flee the area. Police say they were trying to subdue him when his brother ran him over in a desperate escape.

Authorities say the two also killed an MIT police officer as they tried to escape. No charges have been filed yet in that case.

BOSTON (AP) — Three college friends of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were arrested and accused Wednesday of removing a backpack containing fireworks emptied of gunpowder from Tsarnaev's dorm room three days after the attack to try to keep him from getting into trouble.

In court papers, the FBI said one of them threw the backpack in the garbage — it was later found in a landfill by law enforcement officers — after they concluded from news reports that Tsarnaev was one of the bombers.

Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev were charged with conspiring to obstruct justice by concealing and destroying evidence. A third man, Robel Phillipos, was charged with lying to investigators about the visit to Tsarnaev's room.

I read an interesting thing on Swedish news earlier tonight, it has since been removed.

The original report said "the third person arrested is an American citizen, but it's not the dead bomber's widow".
