Quote:The box was found when workers moved a monument dedicated to Chico's founders, John and Annie Bidwell, to build a sidewalk around it.

Archaeologists and historians looked through records and newspaper clippings dating back to 1925, and they show no record of this time capsule being set outside Bidwell Mansion.

Quote:Rangers scattered through records and old newspapers clipping, and found no announcement or documentation of the box being placed under the monument.

“I've never seen or heard anything like this in my career; finding a time capsule that wasn't known about,” said Wright.

The box is welded around the edges, leaving everyone to use their imagination to guess what's inside.

“I honestly don't know,” said Wright. “I'm hoping that it's something or notes from Annie Bidwell or John Bidwell, maybe a kid's toy or something really special to someone at that time.”

I'm curious as to what could be inside the box.

Quote:Bidwell was a Freemason for a time but left the group. He stated that allegiance to the fraternity "was pointless" in a letter to Annie Bidwell on October 17, 1867. His signature still appears in the Book of By-Laws of the Chico-Leland Stanford Lodge #111 in Chico California [7]

Bidwell was an ex-freemason, I wonder if he buried the box during the time he was a freemason?

Quote:From 1925-1935, Bidwell Mansion was once again transformed into another entity when it served as a dormitory for Chico State Teachers College students. It is mentioned by local historians that the students studied and dressed in the rooms, but actually slept outside on the surrounding verandas. The mansion was later dubbed "Bidwell Hall" and housed the Art and Home Economics departments.

I wonder if some kinky artists placed art or objects in the box then welded it shut?

Speculations are running wild.

I think since the box and contents weigh only about 2 pounds, I suspect something made of paper.

We can pin it closer to the opening ceremony,

So what do you think is in it?

I think some Masonic artifacts, aprons and pantyhose perhaps. hmm.gif

Maybe it's one of those little ships in a bottle... 13.gif It's most likely something totally anticlimactic.

chuckle.gif Yankees wants it now!

While dusting inside an old desk the other day, which was handed down to hubby, I found my own time capsule in the form of a crumpled up Toronto Daily Star newspaper, Thursday, December 6, 1962.
