Fake-food scandal revealed as tests show third of products mislabelled

Consumers are being sold drinks with banned flame-retardant additives, pork in beef, and fake cheese, laboratory tests show

The checks on hundreds of food samples, which were taken in West Yorkshire, revealed that more than a third were not what they claimed to be, or were mislabelled in some way. Their results have been shared with the Guardian.

Testers also discovered beef mince adulterated with pork or poultry, and even a herbal slimming tea that was neither herb nor tea but glucose powder laced with a withdrawn prescription drug for obesity at 13 times the normal dose.

A third of fruit juices sampled were not what they claimed or had labelling errors. Two contained additives that are not permitted in the EU, including brominated vegetable oil, which is designed for use in flame retardants and linked to behavioural problems in rats at high doses.

Experts said they fear the alarming findings from 38% of 900 sample tests by West Yorkshire councils were representative of the picture nationally, with the public at increasing risk as budgets to detect fake or mislabelled foods plummet.

Life is like a penny, you can spend it on what you like, but you can ONLY spend it once.

Good idea, although that's probably not very easy with your current living arrangement.

Consumers are all we are coffeetime.gif the infamous quote by Bill vanDerZalm...
"It isn't wrong unless you get caught"

Meaning lieing and lacing food with chemicals and pharmeuticals isn't wrong, getting caught at it is wrong. But people want convenience and are willing to ignore the labels whatever they do (or more importantly, don't) say.

And just to throw this in as a reminder that I may have said before. People need to stop thinkin they're doing themselves a great service by buying ORGANIC. It's just another scam many times to get you spending more in the name of eating healthier. You can buy rolls of organic stickers and unless you are having that particular food tested...YOU NEVER KNOW if it's really organic or not. Just sayin.

I am suspicious of this food testing.

Food testing always reveals horrible things.

Statistically it should reveal good things some of the time.

I guess a good thing would be food containing exactly what the label says.

You would think so huh? We're repeat customers and isn't that what a company wants? But like most everything else...we trust (and most times blindly) the corporations and governments that always promise to have our backs and to have OUR best interests at heart. At best...they've all ended up like the alcoholic and/or junkie parents that are always promising AND never really deliver on the promises of taking care of us. Unfortunately...most all of us are at the mercy and whim of whatever TPTB wants to do with us. Just try to get fully out of their grasp they have on you. You can live in the woods or live on a boat in the water...but sooner or later you have to have some kind of dealings with "them". We're all one way or another a part of the "collective" and "they" will do whatever they want.
