Mythical Viking sunstone may have existed after all

Quote:But now researchers say the mythical Viking “sunstone” may actually have existed.

According to the Independent, their clue was a crystal found on an English shipwreck off the Channel Islands. The ship sank in 1592. Scientists say they believe the substance made of calcite and known as Iceland xpar, was used as a navigational tool alongside the compass.

...the oblong-shaped crystal... permits the observer to follow the azimuth of the sun, far below the horizon with an accuracy as great as plus or minus one degree. Translation: The crystal could have served as a guide even on cloudy days or short Nordic nights.

Now, what other parts of the Sagas were real?

I wish the Sampo was real too. damned.gif

Quote:In Finnish mythology, the Sampo or Sammas was a magical artifact of indeterminate type constructed by Ilmarinen that brought good fortune to its holder. When the Sampo was stolen, it is said that Ilmarinen's homeland fell upon hard times and sent an expedition to retrieve it, but in the ensuing battle it was smashed and lost at sea.

Interesting technology.

Quote:One side would grind out grain, the next side would grind out gold, and the third side would grind out salt -- with these things a family could be happy forever.

And yes, toes are still evil.

I have been thinking more about Norse mythology lately. More specifically, weapons and such that belonged to the gods. Things like Mjolnir, Gungnir, Fenrir, Sleipnir, and Freyer's Gullinbursti, Skioblaonir and magic sword.

And why are there earth gods and celestial gods?

There some far out stories in ye olde sagas for sure. hmm.gif

One thing I found fascinating is the area of Kvenland, apparently accepted as historical fact. This has never ever mentioned in our history education here (I doubt it's any different now) and I only learned about it a few years back. We were basically told there was no culture here before the Swedes (church) came and made us uncivilized brutes come down from the trees. 13.gif

Quote:Kvenland, known as Cwenland, Kænland or similar in sources, is an ancient name for an area in Fennoscandia. Kvenland is known from Icelandic sources written in the 12th and 13th centuries and from an Old English account written in the 9th century.

Since the 17th century most historians have located Kvenland somewhere around or near the Bothnian Bay, in the present-day regions of Swedish Norrbotten and Finnish Ostrobothnia. The traditional East Finnish name of this area was Kainuu, and it has been suggested that the Scandinavian name of Kvenland and Kainuu share etymological roots. The exact location and territorial extension of ancient Kvenland remain unclear.
