Looking at the map of the U.S., no they have not come a long way baby. This law is such an arse.

It is easy to find reference works and websites that attribute the phrase to Charles Dickens, who put it into print in Oliver Twist, 1838. When Mr. Bumble, the unhappy spouse of a domineering wife, is told in court that "...the law supposes that your wife acts under your direction", replies:

"If the law supposes that," said Mr. Bumble, squeezing his hat emphatically in both hands, "the law is a ass - a idiot".

In fact, 'the law is an ass' is from a play published by the English dramatist George Chapman in 1654 - Revenge for Honour:

Ere he shall lose an eye for such a trifle... For doing deeds of nature! I'm ashamed. The law is such an ass.

When law can do no right,
Let it be lawful that law bar no wrong:
Law cannot give my child his kingdom here,
For he that holds his kingdom holds the law.
(King John, 3.1.189), Constance to Cardinal Pandul

Yes, they all seem to be headed in that direction. I would like to see medical and non-medical possession and use decriminalized. We're so backward.

The federal government does not care what the states do.

Cannabis hasn't been demonized for long, but very effectively. Back in 1968 you could still buy hash from the pharmacy over here. And this is old hemp growing country. Medical pot is legal here too, but good luck finding a doctor who's willing to prescribe it, or worse - they don't even know they can. damned.gif

In that regard Obama has been good. For him to go from his pot smoking ‘Choom Gang’ to President, and then attack the states, who's voters have spoken; would be horrible hypocrisy.
He set a good precedent here that I would think most others will follow.
Problem is, a law made back in the 30's to protect big oil, big pharma, textile and lumber industries is still in effect.

Quote:Legislators from 13 states (including Washington and Colorado) and the District of Columbia have pledged their support and co-sponsorship for a House of Representatives bill, the “Respect State Marijuana Laws Act of 2013,” which will prohibit the federal government from interfering with a state’s marijuana laws. While this will not legalize marijuana in these states, it will remove the federal barriers to legalization and allow them to freely write their own marijuana laws, from personal decriminalization to (eventually) legalization.

Quote:Washington, D.C.’s city council will vote on a measure that would decriminalize the possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, making it a civil violation punishable with a fine of $100.
