Why Mali?

Absolutely "nobody" could have possibly anticipated that the week old French incursion into Mali could already have such disastrous consequences: a botched hostage rescue attempt by French commandos while leaving behind one of their team, a downed pilot on the first day of the confrontation, rebels that succeeded in capturing a strategic village and military post, and today, yet another hostage crisis in Algeria that has seen tens of hostages killed, potentially including Americans, following another botched rescue operation. Yet, in some ways, perhaps the stars have aligned just right for the US, which as Bloomberg reports, has wasted no time in sending not only drones in the air, but also boots on the ground.

Mali is one of the most irrelevant countries in West Africa from a resource standpoint, and what happens inside of it is certainly irrelevant from a greater geopolitical standpoint.

What is more important is what this map doesn't show, specifically the name of the country located a few hundred miles to the south: Nigeria.

Now Nigeria is important: very important. Or rather, Nigerian light sweet, one of the highest quality crudes in the world, is.

Mali also has a helluva lot of gold (80% of exports) which France desperately needs to return to the Germans.

Africa's resources may be the start of WWIII

Third world countries, poverty, disease, tremendous resources, corrupt politicians, it's a bully's playground. "If African blacks had guns, slavery never would have happened" (Larry Ward). They still haven't got guns but the stakes are much much higher.

And some rapists get kicked in the balls hi5.gif Rhetoric on Syria and Iran seems to have faded, Russia never backed down. Now it's China's turn to face NATO over Africa. And China has a helluva lot more in it's ar$enal than just weapons. If it has to come to a fight, I have to say i hope the US wins because China cares nothing, doesn't even pretend to, respect human rights or environment.

China has a strong presence in Africa already as well as the West. Let's hope it doesn't come to a showdown. damned.gif

They do and have been building infrastructure. Seems Canada is a resource gold mine too.

Check this out coffeetime.gif A Canadian mining co. got permission to hire 200 temp (cheap) Chinese miners saying no Canadian applicants were qualified for the jobs. They've been ordered to turn over 300 resumes from Canadian miners and refused, saying it would be an invasion of Canadian applicant's privacy.

I agree, especially they don't care about the air their people breath in every day.

The worlds superpower got there with the blood of millions on it's hands. They are handling the death of the petrol dollar using the same tactic.
