Human blood is now on the menu. Wild vampire bats that were thought to exclusively feed on bird blood have been caught feeding on people for the first time, raising health concerns.

Enrico Bernard from the Federal University of Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil, and his team analysed 70 faeces samples from a colony of hairy-legged vampire bats, D. ecaudata, living in Catimbau National Park in north-east Brazil.

They found that three samples out of the 15 they managed to get DNA from had traces of blood from humans. “We were quite surprised,” says Bernard. “This species isn’t adapted to feed on the blood of mammals.”

That is really disturbing.
Not only could a species be mutating to drink human blood, add in the rabies factor and there's a recipe for epic shït storm.
Great.. strange find.

It seems these bats prefer the blood of feral pigs. In any event, Brazil seems to be having wildlife problems because they are taking away their habitat.

Of interest, these bats were useful in medicine.

Quote:And rabies isn’t the only concern either, Pedrosa added. Vampire bats are known reservoirs for a handful of other infectious diseases as well, including several viruses that can cause serious respiratory illness in humans.

That said, vampire bats are part of the native ecology in Brazil, and they’ve also been helpful in certain modern medical advances. Vampire bat saliva contains properties that prevent blood from clotting so the animals can feed — it’s similar to the effect observed in leeches. Scientists have been able to study and incorporate these properties into anticoagulant drugs that can help prevent or break up blood clots in at-risk patients.

People should be very careful about encroaching into territory that does not belong to them.

I'm not concerned, but if they start bursting into flames at sunrise I could see me getting a little worried.

I'm a little worried that we don't have any humans claiming to have been sucked by a vampire bat batboy.jpg

Hi, first post here, JR encouraged me to sign up yesterday.

I wouldn't be too concerned about those, from what I've gathered from nature documentaries they'd probably bite people more often if we wouldn't be so quick to chase them away. My educated guess is that the people whose dna they found are most likely hobos so they wouldn't necessarily know where the bite marks came from. What I'm more concerned about is the possibility for common house mice to acquire a taste for our toes while we sleep.
