Quote:They say the woman was on an elevator in Dundas Square when the man suddenly attacked, cutting off her nose.

What with other news of stabbings on buses in China, I'm getting somewhat leery of going out in large crowds and I sure won't get in an elevator alone with any man now.

At first, I thought the man was maiming women and collecting their body parts, but it seems he did not take it with him because they have reattached half of her nose in hospital. Maybe that's why he didn't take, because he could only sever half of it.

Just pure sick and violent behaviour.

I hope they can find him through the video surveillance.

What the hell? damned.gif

Thankfully this is not a big town, but the influx of foreigners in the last 7 years has been astronomical. I'm sure they're mostly nice, and I'm not saying bad things don't happen without them, but JR insists I carry some sort of self protection if I have to move around outside in darkness.

No there's not been any word of increased knife attacks here. Main violence local newspaper is reporting about is fistfights outside the pub etc.

What type of self protection can we women wear or carry for knife attacks, especially to the head?

Not here jb. Anyway, by the time I whipped out the gun I'd already be stabbed.

My purse is really heavy too (I use if for weight lifting) and I could do that, but as I get older I will have slower reflexes. The elderly are easy targets, or perhaps easy targets are people in small enclosed spaces, with nowhere to run.

Oh there are plenty of things.

1. Good set of lungs. SCREAM!!!! HELP! RAPE!!! FUKN MURDER!!!! That's more important than any weapon because it's instant and you don't need to dig into any purse to do this. This could also scare the attacker off.

2. Elbows to the face, knees to the crotch and feet and anything you got works really well, unless the dude has a knife of course. I guess at that point it depends on how loud you can scream against the odds of being killed.

I took a self defense class a couple of years back and I learned a few nice moves. I recommend it.

Thanks Octo, that's good advice. At this point, I am an easy target for any attacker, although I do know a few tips. The most important ones...don't walk alone at night or in secluded areas (parks), and if you are alone in an elevator and a man enters (only 1) always leave and get on another elevator with more people - this elderly woman should have left that elevator.

Well, that's not going to happen. I like my independence and I'm planning a mother/daughter overnighter in Toronto where this attack took place. Of course, we're going to be roaming around the streets, museum, and aquarium. I will just have to keep a vigilant eye on everyone.

What really gets me scared is this attack was in broad daylight.

I move through town in darkness by myself regularly, at least when school's on. I've never been scared to do so and I've never been hassled or attacked.
