Quote:"Nursing is an art: and if it is to be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painter's or sculptor's work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of God's spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts: I had almost said, the finest of Fine Arts."

- Florence Nightingale

One of ,Canadian artist, Emily Carr's works sold for a great deal of money recently (see below) and I thought I would take a quick look at her pieces. Enjoy.

There are at least two Rembrandt paintings located at the National Gallery of Art, in Washington, D.C.: "Lucretia" and a self portrait.

Both paintings have that something extra that makes them stand out. It's hard to describe. There can be lots of paintings by other masters that look similar or of the same type, but the Rembrandt's are a cut above. They are like magnets on the eyes because you just can't stop looking at them.

Another painting that leaps out is "Woman with a Parasol" by Monet that was on loan to the National Gallery during an exhibition of impressionist paintings. There are many similar renditions. Out of hundreds of great paintings, that painting stood out beyond all the others. I believe the one on display was this one:

Hey BAG, is Lucretia a depiction of Lucretia Borgia (femme fatale)? It was rumored that she had a hollow wooden ring from which she would poison people.

The Lucretia that Rembrandt painted was a woman who lived in ancient Rome who was raped by the King's son and committed suicide as a result.

The impact apparently spurred the overthrow of the king and the beginning of the Roman Republic, according to wikipedia.
