American airstrikes against ISIS targets are under way in Syria, according to a Pentagon official.

"I can confirm that U.S. military and partner nation forces are undertaking military action against ISIL [ISIS] terrorists in Syria using a mix of fighter, bomber and Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles," Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby said. "Given that these operations are ongoing, we are not in a position to provide additional details at this time. The decision to conduct theses strikes was made earlier today by the U.S. Central Command commander under authorization granted him by the commander in chief. We will provide more details later as operationally appropriate."http://abcnews.go.com/International/us-a...d=25686031

Quote:According to Jonathan Karl, chief White House correspondent for ABC News, five Arab nations are taking part in the first round of airstrikes in Syria: Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. A US official speaking to Reuters confirmed the participation of Arab partners in the attack, but refused to specify who those partners were.

Interesting divide and conquer tactic. Three of the countries are OPEC members.

Quote: The possibility of having ISIS in the United States is the stuff of nightmares, considering the type of atrocities they have been regularly committing in the Middle East. But now, the ISIS black flag has been spotted openly flying in the United States, and one ISIS member was arrested at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.

Quote:Jean-Pierre Filiu, a former French diplomat who served in Syria and is now a professor of Middle East studies at Sciences Po, a university in Paris, said Islamic State ultimately can be defeated only in Syria.

"The head of the snake is in Syria," Filiu said by video teleconference at a forum on Monday sponsored by the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
