It may be spring, but for the Great Lakes, particularly Lake Superior – it’s looking like winter more than ever.

Images captured this week by NASA’s Aqua satellite show that Lake Superior is still nearly 60 percent ice covered, according to the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab. The ice is an average of 8.9 inches thick.

Around this time last year, only around 3.6 percent of the lake was covered with ice, and in 2012, ice was completely gone by April 12, NASA said in a statement

60 %! damned.gif That's a lot! We have exceptionally little ice. Maybe there can only be so much ice in the world and now you have it.

Hi jb. I can't start my garden yet either due to coolish weather, but I want to sow the seeds directly in the ground because - maybe I'm wrong - but the herbs seem to be hardier planted this way. I am also hoping for an Indian Summer later so I can harvest more, later.

Due to the changing climate, we, supposedly, have new hardiness zones.

Jb, you were in zone 5 and now you are in zone 6. I was in zone 6, so I expect I am now in zone 7. So, maybe I can think about planting earlier than the May 24 weekend.

I think we're in zone 5 beercheer.gif JR threw some seeds out in the flower bed a little over a week ago, but so far nothing uhoh.gif It's been frosting some nights but the seeds like it that way. We'll see. I need to start a tomato plant and peppers. Many bell pepper plants and all sorts of peppers woohoo.gif My pepper plants haven't been doing good outside so I'm going to replace the soil. Got some good organic stuff today! yay.gif A bit over 200 liters beercheer.gif

Hey Octo, are you going to replace the soil to a depth of 12 inches?

I'm not sure. I have to study the pepper plant a little first reading.gif, see how deep their roots will go and what they want.

The tomatoes love it so I won't replace it all.
