Our router is provided by the ISP. It's idiot proofed so you can't really do much with it.
You can flash many routers http://lifehacker.com/178132/hack-attack...600-router
This hack turns a Linksys WRT54GL Wireless $60 router into a $600 router.
You always run the risk of bricking it, so best to find a used one.

I just can't figure out why they keep us throttled back.

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to poor

Where I live (in the DSL area of the sticks) it's capacity.

With DSL (normally 4mbps, I paid for 6mbps) it was acceptable. AT&T has spread its u-Verse gospel and they promise 18mbps ~ the most they could deliver me was 16+mbps ~ it's damned good, but I heard they aren't accepting new customers due to capacity. At least they haven't throttled back ~ and I watch it like a hawk. I'm glad they aren't shoving as many straws in the pitcher of beer as they could.

Hopefully, either Comcast will spring to throw a leg of optical down this leg of the road (currently a quarter mile away) or AT&T will spring for more hardware and we'll actually get the advertised speed, or better.

Absolutely everything comes in through the internet. We cut the TV (sat) cord nearly three years ago and haven't had a land line phone for 10 years. It saves us a buncha money but makes us terribly dependent.
