This is how it would go down with hubby and me.

Hubby: What do you want for your birthday.
Me: Don't worry about it, I already bought those diamond and pearl earrings for myself from you.

And I did and they look like comets with long tails. Nice and at 75% off regular price.

It appears gift giving is extremely important in a marriage and seems to not be because of materialism or greed, but stems more from emotional and security bonding - so it has to do with empathy, understanding, terms of endearment, etc.

In this article, a new element is introduced into the household production function: gifts. Gifts occur when spouses use their time and/or incomes to produce commodities that usually only have value to their spouse, such as empathy and understanding. The difficulty of identifying a potential mate's capacity to produce gifts prior to marriage and of negotiating for them during marriage is argued as having contributed to the increase in the divorce rate. Evidence is provided that women are the spouses most likely to seek a divorce and part of their motivation is an inadequate receipt of gifts during marriage.

Don't buy your wife a wok is my advice, unless she absolutely tells you that is all she wants. lol.gif

Yes, a total disaster as in divorce if these types of studies are ignored.
