Then why are we left with free will and varying levels of high intellect (a direct threat to TPTB) - no life is a gambit and we are free to change it at our will.

Tis true

the sad thing about the truth ? " we can't do anything about it "

the Happy thing about the truth ? " we don't care "

The funny thing about the truth ? " Us, and believe it , those who enslave get a big laugh out of our antics "

The cute thing about the truth ? " we make the best Toys "

The Ugly thing about the truth ? " We think we are better than anything living in the Universe ",,,

and we will destroy anything alive if we cannot enslave it to our will "

The very horrible thing about the truth ?

""" We the enslaved are a mirror image of our enslavers "

If he didn't move from cave to cave, I would suggest someone in his position use the forest to grow edibles, or use existing forest food, and learn how to preserve the food.
