We had a big and beautiful moon last night as well. It is really odd how the moon seems to vary in size and color so much.

Quote:The Moon illusion is an optical illusion in which the Moon appears larger near the horizon than it does while higher up in the sky. This optical illusion also occurs with the Sun and star constellations. It has been known since ancient times, and recorded by numerous different cultures. The explanation of this illusion is still debated.

So they still can't quite explain it. coffeetime.gif

Ive been fascinated by and have read a lot about the "moon illusion" mystery for many years,it certainly deserves its own thread if there isnt one already and one of the articles i've read about it says that if you stand on your head/hang you head upside down while looking at the moon, the size illusion goes away, whats up with that?! as well as reading something like if you close one eye and hold up your finger next to the moon while looking at the two with your other eye the moon illusion will also go away and whats really weird is that some people dont see the moon any larger near the horizon, while some other people standing right there with them do and wtf is up with that?! and I think that this illusion mystery only works/appears with full moons?! because only full moons rise up from earths horizon?!

It's a really interesting phenomenon. If it's also affecting other heavenly bodies as seen from earth, what is the change in our atmosphere that causes it?
