The trucker protest isn't a hoax. But the cost of fuel when those trucks only get a few miles to the gallon means most truckers would be spending hundreds of dollars to go to DC to protest.

Truckers have been feeling the pinch economically for quite a few years now. Thus a trip to DC would have been a major economic decision for them.
