This Spring I took him into the garden and had him plant some potatoes, corn, and giant Sunflowers.
As the season progressed, he became more interested in the progress, and when we harvested the potatoes, he told his teacher about how it is done. (He lives in NYC and goes to PS 41. He is now the resident expert on farming in his 1st grade classroom).
Last November I bought him a "beginner" fishing rod and reel, and he's also very interested in fishing. ( I was certainly glad the Sunfish hit quickly, as fishing can be pretty boring for a 5 year old if nothing happens).
Kids will be kids, and these days with both parents working, and usually the grandparents working too, it can be very easy to allow electronic media to be the adult in the room.
I intend to teach our Grand Daughter all I can about how Mother Earth works, as it is, in my opinion, essential knowledge.
I'm in my seventh decade on Earth. I know things.

They grew up playing in the woods with friends, sticks and stones though.

Good post.

But, since I no longer have a birthday, you'll all be catching up to me soon.
I sign up for social security in 52 days. ( three months prior to eligibility, as I don't trust the .gov to not pull the rug out from under us after the election. I figure if I register as early as I can, 90 days before, I'll be in the system and protected)
I'm in my seventh decade on Earth. I know things.
there are'nt even enough fish in the waters anymore.
