Send in the clowns — please!

As the “Greatest Show on Earth” returns to Brooklyn Thursday, circus folk fear a national clown shortage is on the horizon.

Membership at the country’s largest trade organizations for the jokesters has plunged over the past decade as declining interest, old age and higher standards among employers align against Krusty, Bozo and their crimson-nosed colleagues.

“What’s happening is attrition,” said Clowns of America International President Glen Kohlberger, who added that membership at the Florida-based organization has plummeted since 2006. “The older clowns are passing away.”

"Buttons" the tragic clown/doctor/murderer in hiding, played by James Stewart had me mezmerized.

Quote:Here is the thing you need to know about “Buttons the Clown.” The Jimmy Stewart character never removes his clown makeup, not ever, not backstage, not on days off, not even when the circus is holed up in its “winter quarters” for months at a time. NO ONE in the film ever comments on this. The audience is supposed to accept this as some sort of charming, personal quirk. In reality, it is crazy and more than a little creepy. “Oh boy! Here comes Buttons, the clown who never takes off his makeup! And has a bag of scalpels.”

Maybe the better question would be, "How can we help reduce the number of clowns more quickly?" coffeetime.gif

Heres a retro image of my favorite play toy when i was a really young child of around two and three years old a bozo clown doll and he slept with me for years and he went with me everywhere i went but eventually i accidently dropped him out of our car window as he was simultaneously pulled out by the wind while my parents and i were driving down the south east expressway and he was suddenly gone forever without warning and i cried for hours so long ago...

I didn't have a clown toy, as far as I can recall, but sometimes I think I married a clown; hubby is a natural born comedian.

When I think of clowns, I think of rodeo clowns, the guys that willing! go into the arena and chase the bulls from thrown bullriders. They're dressed like clowns but they save lives.
